Press Release - Pre Race WEDNESDAY 22nd - NATIONAL POLICE CROSS COUNTY TO TAKE PLACE AT PERRANPORTH WITH RECORD 440 COMPETITORS Police in Cornwall will be hosting the National Police Sport UK cross-country Championships for 2006 in Perranporth on Wednesday. This is the first time that a national police sporting event has been hosted within the county. The event occurs over 3 days from Tuesday 21 March, athletes will arrive at Perranporth for pre race briefings and stay overnight. Wednesday 22nd March will be race day and athletes will depart on the 23rd. On race day start times are 13:15pm for ladies and 14:15pm for men. The course is based on the route of the long established Force championships but has been made longer and wetter. The men's event is 7 miles approx and the ladies 4 miles. Both courses incorporate beach, cliffs, dunes and sea. Following the race there will be presentations in a local hotel by Chief Supt Rob Cooper and local celebrities. When this event was planned it was anticipated that there would be 200-250 runners . There are now actually have 440 entrants including 320 who are staying over in Perranporth for 2 nights. The runners include large contingents from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and everywhere in between. The course has been designed in conjunction and with the assistance of the Cornwall Schools Athletics Association, and the event stands to be the largest police sporting event ever. Both the men’s and
ladies courses are very challenging even by national standards and they
include the full length of the beach, much of the dunes and a section in the
sea. The standard of runners will be very high indeed with many top trophies
being contested both individually and as teams. The event has been sponsored
well by local businesses including Cornish Pure Blue Water, Skinners
Brewery, The Ponsmere Hotel and The Watering Hole. The RNLI and Town Council
are also supporting the event. The event is self-financing and the
competitors have all had to use up their leave to partake in the event.
