| A pensioner on a mobility scooter has died in hospital after he was in a collision with an elderly pedestrian. The men, both aged in their 70s, were taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske, near Truro yesterday morning. The crash happened on Trinity Street in St Austell at about 11am. The man on the scooter, which has a top speed of 8mph, suffered serious head injuries in the incident. He died yesterday afternoon, police said. Officers confirmed that he is a local man but did not reveal his identity. The pedestrian remained in hospital last night. Collision investigators closed the road for five hours to examine the scene of the crash. A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said last night: "This is an extremely rare incident and it is very unusual for it to be so serious. "There have been recorded road traffic collisions before of this kind involving mobility scooters but generally they are very minor." He said an investigation into the crash was under way and witnesses were being interviewed |
